Farmers under the Push Pull Project from ward 22 Bubi district in Mat North Province were inspecting a Push Pull demo plot during a WLZ project monitoring visit. The Push Pull technology is an integrated pest management system which can mitigate against the Fall Amy worm pest in maize fields and parasitic weed (Striga) as well as improve the soil fertility.
Under the technology, maize is intecropped with a Desmodium species which is a legume that repells (Push) the Fall Army worm moth from the naize field. On the margins of the field, a hardy forage crop called Brachiaria is planted on 3 rows to attract (Pull) the Fall Army worm moth to come and lay its eggs in an environment that hinders hatching of its eggs thus reducing the fall army worm population in the Maize field.
