WLZ Pillars

1. Land and Natural Resource Rights
2. Sustainable Agriculture Commercialization and Trade Justice
3. Food and Livelihood Entitlements
4. Gender Rights for Women Farmers and Empowerment

WLZ implementing Approaches:

  1. Gender Transformation
WLZ has been using strategies that addresses some harmful gender roles, norms, unequal power relations which is causing gender-based inequalities.
  2. Movement building (Rural Women’s Assembly). Movement building under the Rural Women’s Assembly groups for collective strength, advocacy and for rural women’s participation in decision making structures at all levels to address power inequalities. WLZ also developed a Gender Equality Training Manual which uses the study circle methodology to facilitate continued learning on gender and women’s rights for creation of gender sensitive communities where women’s rights are respected.
  3. Climate Justice and environmental awareness
WLZ has been using the following strategies to address climate change effects:
    1. Sports for Change on climate resilience, adaptation and awareness raising
    2. promotion of sustainable low cost solar powered irrigation schemes.
    3. adoption of water harvesting technologies and promotion of conservation farming
    4. Promotion of Indigenous Seed fairs, multiplication, preservation and storage.
    5. National and Regional participation (SADC People’s Summit, COP Meetings) in
demanding climate justice (Polluter must pay).
  4. Human- Rights Based Approach. WLZ believed that women’s rights are human rights and it utilizes the human rights-based approach to put women’s rights at the centre of its programming. WLZ promotes participation of women and girls in private and public spaces for inclusive governance and increased leadership of women in land and natural resources management systems. WLZ programs at national level interrogates a duty bearer to put in place policies and laws that protects rights holders. In the communities WLZ empower rights holder including vulnerable groups such as women, girls, LGBTQ and those living with disabilities to claim and exercise their rights
  5. Study Circle Methodology:
WLZ uses the Study Circle methodology for adult learning in the communities. A study Circle is a small group of 6-15 adult people who meet regularly to learn and share information and experiences about a topic or subject that is of interest to them. In the study circle work is built around the participants’ search for knowledge according to their own needs and interests. The participants’ want to learn ways to solve problems affecting their daily lives. Study circle members decide how often to meet and this is also determined by the topic they would like to discuss. During discussions, members sit in a circle as this provides a natural learning environment for all participants to freely discuss and express their opinions. Participation in
a study circle is voluntary and group members are encouraged to listen to each other’s viewpoints. The study circle members choose a facilitator who guides the discussions in the group and facilitates effective participation by all members.
We want a society in which women´s lives have been transformed through improved access to land and natural resources.
